BA Art and Design Week 13 Brief 1 - Multiples

Red Doll

My last doll is probably my favourite; I wanted to create a doll that had some kind of scandalous backstory; like a mysterious woman who was perhaps in an unhappy marriage and who secretly attends masquerade balls to satisfy her needs.

One of the things I love most about this doll, is the red dress. I actually had no red paper to use for an outfit, so instead I had to use red ribbons and lots and lots of glue. I really loved the shiny silky effect of the ribbon for her top.

Glittery red shoes
(Not a very good photo)

Finally I created a tiny mask to go along with the doll... and it was feckin' hard!
Its not as elegant looking as I would have liked, but I'm pleased enough, I used paper as the main body, black sequins with red glitter for decorations, a couple of red roses on the left hand side and finally a black ribbon attached to either side of the mask, so I could tie it around her head.

I like these photos because, the shadows and the mask help to convey an air of alluring mystery for the doll.

Hand Mould

Another session from our 3D lecturer who made us take a brief brake from the clay sculpture mould to teach us about another mould making method; this one being a mould for already made objects.

For this test we used our hands (we had to help each other).

Step 1. Cover hand with slow set alginate

(advised, put Vaseline on hands before applying alginate to ease removal of alginate)

Step 2. Once alginate is dry cover it in layers of plaster strips to create a firm mould

Step 3. Once dry, remove the mould from hand, and now fill mould with plaster to create my own set of hands.

While I think this is a really nifty process, unfortunately I don't believe I have a use for it for this project.

My Hands!

(My pinkie broke off)

I was really impressed with all the details that were picked up by the mould.

Pink

My childhood fondness of pink got the better of me; I made this doll, literally with the intention of making something, pretty, pink and frilly.

This doll is the second odd one out in my collection; another one that I found in a charity shop that's not the exact same as the others.

I made this doll more for myself than for the project, however I considered that maybe because she looks so much, brighter and pinker than the other dolls, she's almost like a Disney princess and maybe therefore a good guy.

Considering that most of the dolls have a horrible personality or agenda against each other, perhaps this one is a victim of one of the other dolls.

A pretty doll like this with all her pink, pearls and long yellow hair is bound to be on the receiving end of someone's demented jealousy; perhaps someone who acts like her friend but secretly hates her.

Perhaps the delusional brat with ponytails I made the week before?

Pony Tails
I wanted to make a brat!

I just knew I wanted to make a doll who just looked like a spoilt child and so my instant thought was curly bunches on the sides of her head; childish looking and just some kind of sour expression on her face.

So is she had a spoilt child personality, then she's someone who's used to getting what she wants, and what she wants is something some other doll has, a man?

Perhaps this doll is delusional and believes that the man is hers, but really he doesn't even know she exists. So he courts other dolls and this makes her angry because she believes that they are trying to steal him away from her; because she's so delusional, it never occurs to her that its the man coming onto them and so, in order for them to be together she has to remove all those who threaten their love, and one day he'll see; they were meant to be together...

Green and Pink

I quickly decided that I really wanted to create a pair of twin dolls because I figured that I could come up with a really dark backstory to go with them; some kind of sibling rivalry going too far.

(Outfits similar but different)

I liked the idea of one being two faced because they are secretly jealous of the other; perhaps the other is more confident and out going and is seen as more desirable to possible suitors; it could be that its all in the two faced one's head. for whatever reason, one has dark intentions towards the other.

Another idea could be that two face hates the fact that they share the same face and believes its unfair, because neither of them ever gets the full attention they deserve, that only one of them should look the way they do, and it might as well be her...
